JOSEPH-GUY ROPARTZ (1864-1955): Complete String Quartets, Vol. 3 - No. 1 in G Minor, Fantaisie brève sur un thème unique sur le nom d'Albéric Magnard.
Catalogue Number: 05J007
Description: The end of this cycle brings us Ropartz's earliest two works in the genre: the unpublished Fantaisie dates from 1892 and was partially a product of the close friendship between the young Breton composer and Albéric Magnard - a 15-minute, four-movement suite based on a theme derived from the musical letters of Magnard's name. This is more of an esprit compared to the first quartet of the following year. Lasting almost 44 minutes, this is as Franckian as a young composer of that date can get, cyclic in form and bulging with brilliantly worked out motifs, colorful harmonic ideas and firm grasp of counterpoint with a folk-like theme of Breton type in the final movement. Quatuor Stanislas.
