VINCENT D'INDY (1851-1931): Orchestral Works, Vol. 1 - Jour d'été à la montagne, Op. 61, La Forêt enchantée, Op. 8, Souvenirs, Op. 62.
Catalogue Number: 05J002
Description: We hope this will be a long, full series, since D'Indy wrote quite a bit of orchestral music, most of which remains utterly unknown. The main work here is the 1905 Jour d'été, whose brilliant orchestration and gorgeous mixture of Romanticism and Impressionism should have long since made it a repertory item. It's a dawn-midday-evening triptych like similar Impressionistic works but the result is magical. Souvenirs is the only work here currently available elsewhere in the U.S. - a 19-minute tone-poem from 1907 inspired by the death of D'Indy's first wife, in which a leitmotif representing the late Isabelle is developed and transformed through a series of musical reminiscences of youth and happier times. The early "Enchanted Forest" (1878) is a result of two trips to Germany by the young composer which acknowledges Wagner and the Romantic German symphonic poem of the Lisztian school.
