Description: Not a film of a stage performance, this is a studio production shot right after the 1969 world premiere of Penderecki's opera based on John Whiting's dramatization of Aldous Huxley's novel (sung in a German translation by Erich Fried). This allows the use of special effects (for instance, naked writhing bodies superimposed over Prioress Jeanne's face right in the first three minutes as she is introduced). This opera will have seemed pretty wild and daring for the period with Penderecki seeming fixated on the lurid (but we are dealing with lust, blasphemy, exorcism and religious persecution, for crying out loud). The music is in the style of his Hiroshima period and is always striking. And, remember, Ken Russell was just around the corner with his really over-the-top film version! Tatiana Troyanos (mezzo), Andrzej Hiolski (baritone), Bernard Ladysz, Hans Sotin (basses), Chorus of the Hamburg State Opera, Hamburg Philharmonic State Orchestra; Marek Janowski. Mono. 4:3 NTSC all regions. Color. English subtitles. 108 min.
