Description: The VW sonata dates from 1903 and was discovered by Yates in a small notebook in the British Library. In four movements, it may have been inspired by the great, German-born horn-player Adolf Borsdorf, whose name and London address appear on one page of the manuscript. The Bax is a single-movement piece from 1901 whose piano writing is flamboyant and whose horn part already suggests the composer’s later orchestral writing for the instrument.
