Description: The major work here is the three-movement, 28-minute Symphonic Suite of 1882 which was likely first thought of by Reznicek as his Symphony No. 1. The first two movements betray a youthful interest in Wagner while the scherzo finale is kind of like Mendelssohnian fairy music but a bit darker and more sinister. The suite from the incidental music to Strindberg’s “Dream Play” (1916/21) is a series of short, atmospherically dense musical pictures while the Carnival Suite (1931/35) is a symphonic intermezzo in the manner of a Baroque suite borrowed from his opera Gondoliere des Dogen. Weimar Staatskapelle; Stefan Solyom.
