Description: Discovered in the archives of the British Library around the turn of this century, Holst’s sextet was written in 1900 and is a full-length work of four movements (25 minutes in this performance). You might identify it on a blind hearing as by a conservative German Late Romantic composer but the Adagio really stands out - a deeply felt dirge cum funeral march. It’s the only premiere recording on this disc but there aren’t many recordings of the other early chamber pieces on this disc either. Ensemble Arabesques.
