PETROS SHOUJOUNIAN (b.1957): String Quartets Nos. 3-6.

Description: This Armenian-Canadian composer wrote these four quartets to mark the 100th anniversary of the Armenian genocide last year. Each of the total of 14 movements is named after a river in Armenia and all of the music is based on medieval Armenian liturgical chants which, normally for a single voice, are here enriched with polyphony. The result can be compared with certain examples of Baltic music like that of Vasks or Pärt - contemplative, meditative, melancholy but somehow looking beyond reality to eternity but there are faster movements which suggest folk music and are gently joyous in effect. Quatuor Molinari.
