Description: Even more material for the double bass lover this month: both Sprang and Rankl were Austrians with significant orchestral œuvres (12 symphonies between them which we’ll never hear) who wrote their sonatas for the principal bass players in the Budapest Opera orchestra and the Vienna Philharmonic (Sprongl) and the Scottish National Orchestra (Rankl, who spent a significant part of his career in the UK). All three are tonal and, more importantly, lyrical, giving the instrument the ability to exploit its singing ability. Leon Bosch (double bass), Sung-Suk Kang (piano).
