Description: The intended successor to Les Martyrs at the Paris Opera, this was left incomplete in 1840 due to various complications at the Opéra. Two different completions have been made, one in 1882 when the opera was completed by a Donizetti student, Matteo Salvi, who also translated the whole thing into Italian. The other was done for Flemish Opera in 2012, by the contemporary composer Giorgio Battistelli (back to French again and offered here in November 2013 - 11P030). Opera Rara has chosen neither, resorting to the almost complete first two acts (91 minutes of music here) where very little had to be done to fill gaps (this was done by Martin Fitzpatrick); all is detailed in twelve pages of notes. So here’s the first recording of 95% pure Duc d’Albe, a work Donizetti was still lamenting the fate of even in his final struggles with the disease that killed him. 2 CDs.  French-English libretto. Angela Meade (soprano), Michael Spyres (tenor), Laurent Naouri (bass-baritone), Gianluca Buratto (bass), Opera Rara Chorus, Hallé Orchestra; Mark Elder.
