Description: This series promises to rehabilitate a composer who is much more an important link than is currently thought between the Classical and Romantic periods (did you know that the Mazeppa piece here, from 1828, is apparently the first musical composition to be called "Tone Poem"?). Not being a virtuoso pianist himself, Loewe's piano pieces tend toward poetry, expressiveness and sensitivity as he uses all the features of the contemporary piano possible to color and accentuate his romantic, narrative visions: only the Grand Sonate does not have a literary or pictorial subtext. Linda Nicholson (1849-50 Collard & Collard fortepiano).
