Description: This collection of attractive, varied short works show the composer's remarkable versatility and encyclopaedic familiarity with a huge range of organ music traditions, easily emulating northern and southern European styles and incorporating forms and quotations from the pre-baroque to the romantic era. They are all very tonal, with a buoyant and original harmonic touch; the earliest piece, the Sonata da chiesa (1999/2001) is noticeably more ascetic and harmonically spare than the recent pieces, though clearly from the same pen. They run the gamut from lively toccatas full of joyful energy to the gently reflective Berceuse, Litany, and Remembering, with some delightful humorous touches in the Sonatina's first movement and the Fanfare. A treasure-trove for organist s looking for new and original voluntaries, and a greatly enjoyable recital for the listener. The organ, the largest fully mechanical instrument in Europe, is an interesting one, capable of some very distinctive registration which is amply explored here. Erik Simmons (organ of Laurenskerk, Rotterdam).
