Description: The notes to this disc point out how much things have changed in critical reception of accessible new music in the 1980s. Edwards confesses to having supplied his 1982 concerto with "exuberant dance rhythms, colourful instrumentation and accessible melodies and harmonies" and critics skewered it for its "predilection for the luscious" and its ability to be "grasped on the first hearing". Sculthorpe's (1983) has rich infusions of Japanese and gamelan influence grafted onto the western concerto tradition and also received critical brickbats for its "immediate appeal". There is no other recording of the Edwards available so fans of colorful and approachable piano concertos shouldn't hesitate. Original 1990 release.
