Description: Known as "MacBartok" for his manner of compositional handling of Scottish traditional music, Chisholm produced in his first concerto (1932. rev. 1937) a work of considerable appeal in the tradition of big Romantic piano concertos, with a great deal of local color. The Hindustani (1949 and a world premiere recording) is based on three ragas, one for each movement, which are associated with, respectively, 9 o'clock in the morning (grave, dignified, melancholy but which Chisholm seasons with a dash of con fuoco); the early evenings of December and January (music of sensuous allure); and spring (bird-like, colorufl, witty and capricious). Much more detail on the composer, his sources and workings of each concerto are on offer in the six pages of excellent notes. Danny Driver (piano), BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra; Rory MacDonald.
