Description: This Azeri composer burst onto the scene in 1948 with the first two works listed above - the first time the Azerbaijani folk music-type, the mugam, had been translated to a western orchestra. Basing his work on authentic folk melodies, these single-movement pieces alternate bteween song and dance-like episodes in improvisatory style. Gyulistan (1971) is a later example while the 1961 Capriccio, a thrilling example of orchesral pyrotechnics, is also rooted in folk music. Russian Philharmonic Orchestra; Dmitry Yablonsky.
