Description: Kamieniak's harmonic vocabulary throughout is that of Liszt, his contemporaries and imitators. Some pieces are effective neo-romantic pastiche, largely avoiding flamboyant virtuosity in favor of Romantic melancholy, apparently without irony, even when resorting to recognizable quotations from 19th-century sources (and in the Suite, Baroque sources). Elsewhere, elements of minimalism inflect the romantic leanings of the music, bringing it close to the world of Glass' Solo Piano musings, and some pieces rely on the slow progression of consonant intervals that passes for meditativeness in certain new age music, though these are in the minority. The Suite's concluding Tango is good value and robustly entertaining, but seems oddly isolated among pieces that mostly seem intended to do something rather different. Tomasz Kamieniak (piano).
