Description: Laks, a survivor of Auschwitz as head of the camp orchestra, finally appears on disc as a composer with art-song settings of eight Yiddish folk songs from 1947 and his Elegy of 1961. Ullmann's three songs date from just before his deportation and murder in 1944 while the Weisgall gives us the perspective of a second-generation American Jew (setting two of the same songs as Laks) in 1976 when he uses a complex, avant-garde language. Hebrew, Yiddish, Polish-English texts. Valérie Suty (soprano), Vladimir Stoupel (piano).
