FERDINAND RIES (1784-1838): Piano Quartet in E Minor, Op. 129, Piano Quintet in B Minor, Op. 74.
Catalogue Number: 04J053
Description: World premiere recording of the late E minor work, dedicated to Archduke Rudolph and a whopping (for the period) 39 minutes long, in fact, longer than anything yet to appear on CD by Ries. The piano players are far more integrated with each other in this richly contrapuntal music which puts thematic development before any rhapsodic freedom of expression. However, the expressive filigree keyboard writing suggests that Ries was an important model for Chopin. The quintet, adding a double bass and the more "popular" of these two works, provides more bravura writing for the pianist and has a number of memorable melodies. Klavierquintett-Wien.
