Description: The 28 minutes of first recordings here comprise Bax’s vitally contrasted Four Pieces (Fantastic March, Romanza, Idyll and Phantasie) from 1947 and Cohen’s evocatively colored Russian Impressions – Sunset on the Volga, The Exile, The Old Church at Wilna and The Tartars – a suite dating from around 1913 that variously hints at the influence of Mussorgsky, Debussy and Glinka. This appears to be the first recording of any music by the pianist Bax left his wife for and who remained his muse for 42 years. Mark Bebbington (piano).
