KARL KLINGLER (1879-1971): Violin Concerto in E (Ulf Hoelscher [violin], Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra; Volker Schmidt-Gertenbach. rec. 1979), Viola Sonata in D Minor (Karl Klingler [viola], Michael Raucheisen [piano]. no rec. date).

Description: When these works were composed in 1906 and 1909, Klingler was second concertmaster of the Berlin Philharmonic and he also had an eponymous string quartet. Conservative to the core, the 39-minute concerto is very Brahmsian and the 43-minute sonata follows suit. Although no date is given for the sonata recording, Raucheisen’s presence as accompanist and the decent sound (radio or studio recording?) makes the early 1940s the most likely period.
