Description: Les Amours is a complete ballet from 1945 which is a brilliantly orchestrated, all but a "concerto for orchestra" with four panels of seduction: Leda, Europa, Ganymede and Danaë with a final scene of Jupiter's reconciliation with Juno. Orchestral color is captivating whether the music flirts with Hollywood film scores, neo-classicism or, in Jupiter-as-eagle's pas de deux with Ganymede, blues. A 2015 first recording, on Timpani, is, alas, no longer available. Sauguet’s wide-ranging influences, notably the orchestration of Richard Strauss as well as the works of Satie and les Six, give his ballet “The Show-Folk” of the same year a flowing, openly melodic style that is immediately appealing and full of wit and charm. Estonian National Symphony Orchestra; Neeme Järvi.
