Description: Truly rare repertoire from a rather unexpected source: Tailleferre’s 14-minute Ballade of 1920-22 is a lovely example of French Impressionism mixed with the brighter, more direct manner of Les Six and Françaix (1936) brings the joy, wit and grace you’d expect (each of these pieces is only available in a 40-CD box of 1960s and 70s recordings from the Vox, Candide, etc. period now out on Brilliant Classics), but there is no other available recording of the longest work here, the 20-minute Fantaisie from 1912 by Boulanger which looks back at Rachmaninov and Franck while using somewhat impressionistic harmonies with sections having an almost “film-score” richness. Florian Uhlig (piano), Deutsche Radio Philharmonie; Pablo González.
