BERNHARD ROMBERG (1767-1841): Cello Concertos No. 1 in B Flat, Op. 2 and No. 5 in F Sharp Minor, Op. 30.
Catalogue Number: 03R007
Description: Romberg’s ten cello concertos were considered the ne plus ultra of their time and not only because they were almost the only works in that genre between Haydn’s and Schumann’s. We’ve already encountered the drama and personality of Romberg’s three symphonies in 2008 (03J042) and the same qualities are abundant in these two concertos from the mid 1790s and from 1808. This is late Classicism in its last bloom, which explains why Romberg’s music fell out of favor by the beginning of the 1820s, but it’s a full and beautiful flowering.
