Description: Zwicker's opera is based on Ariel Dorfman's screenplay for the 1994 film with the same title. A woman, a former freedom fighter against a previous brutal regime, believes that she has fortuitously been given the opportunity to confront one of her captors and torturers, a man whose face she never saw. The shifting balance of power between victims and perpetrators, the tensions between the individuals, and the uncertainty over the identity of the accused man provide the dramatic substance of the narrative. Zwicker's score adds a chorus, generalizing the identities of the protagonists to a larger population, to the three specific character soloists, whose strongly characterized material takes on somewhat of the character of leitmotifs. Fragments of the Schubert quartet which the torturer had played incessantly during he woman's ordeal punctuate the harsh, frequently abrasively dissonant orchestral score, for large forces, which contrasts with the more intimate drama played out between the principal characters. German libretto.
