Description: The lowered seventh degree, triadic harmonies, cantorial recitative, naturally flowing melodies (often modal), ostinato rhythms, abundant counterpoint and rhythmic and ornamental elements of Eastern music are heard throughout these choral works which cover most of Hovhaness' career (the latest from 1984). The organ is present throughout and quite often plays much more than a mere accompanimental role; two pieces add winds and brass (as listed above). Even if you don't normally think of buying choral music, you might be very pleasantly surprised by this! David Chalmers, James E. Jordan Jr. (organ), Gloriae Dei Cantores; Elizabeth C. Paterson.
