Description: Here is an entertaining predecessor to Beethoven's Pastoral Symphony dating from 1785. Knecht, whose opera Die Aeolsharfe was offered in these pages in July of 2009 (07L042), takes just under 26 minutes to offer us a five-movement symphony of scene-painting (cheery pastoral scene, intimations of a storm, raging storm, clearing of storm, thanksgiving of nature and people) which offers much orchestral color and exciting use of percussion. (For those of you who don't like the human voice, don't worry, the four arias total only 10:35.) German-English texts. Sarah Wegener (soprano), Hofkapelle Stuttgart; Frieder Bernius.
