Description: In all of these works but the third sonata of 1967, Halffter mingles Spanish elements (a feel more than any actual use of folk-like motifs) with neo-classicism, polytonality and some atonality which combine to give the impression of a distorted nationalism. The Third sonata, though, is dodecaphonic with some aleatoric sections in its third movement which, presumably, will only appeal to collectors of modernism.
