Description: This is a curious exercise that is pretty much guaranteed to appeal to admirers of Kagel's iconoclastic, off-kilter but always ingenious examinations of what music is and does. The original Kagel is extracts from his piano score for a stage work, which consisted of short character pieces. These were arranged by the composer in collaboration with the present performers. They are tonally grounded, or at least harmonically coherent, approachable, attractive and fun, with the usual Kagel questioning undertones. They work well in the saxophone trio medium, with the parts often distributed to emulate an accordion, probably not accidentally. Interspersed among these are movements of two Schubert string trios, which sound rather incongruous in these arrangements and aren't strictly necessary for the full appreciation of the Kagel, though they're certainly enjoyable enough. Sax Allemande.
