Description: The 2005 concerto, commissioned for these artists, is the most lyrical and flowingly melodic such work you're likely to find and in a full-blooded, wide-open-space kind of American musical style in the line from Copland to Harris and Hanson (under the latter of whom Jones studied at Eastman). Needless to say, the 1992 symphony, a one-movement work of 24 minutes which tells the history in music of the spectacular geological formation near Amarillo (whose Symphony Orchestra commissioned it), is of the same energetic, raw-boned and outsized character (and even uses some Comanche themes in the "trio" part of its "scherzo" section). Christopher Olka (tuba), Seattle Symphony; Gerard Schwarz.
