Description: This ensemble throughout several variations in personnel necessitated by the death of one of its founders, Bruno Pizzamiglio, has enjoyed a lively relationship with many contemporary Portuguese composers including the two featured here. Lopes-Graça's characterful set of pieces, written for the ensemble, ranges from the exuberantly dancelike to the idyllic, in a readily accessible chromatic or polytonal idiom with a strong emphasis on melody. D'Almeida's piece is an extended in memoriam for Pizzamiglio, alternately elegiac and agitated. Considerable variety of texture and mood is nonetheless achieved, diverse episodes suggesting a kind of biographical sketch or eulogy as much as a straightforward lament for a departed colleague. Opus Ensemble.
