Description: The 1908 quintet mystified audiences at its premiere through its ruggedness, sheer size (46 minutes), luxuriant flowering of melodic elements from a very few motifs which are constantly reworked, now in dense counterpoint, now homophonically, recognizable form seeming at times to dissolve. A far cry from the incredibly simple, nostalgic sextet, written in summer of 1945 while Pfitzner was homeless, in hospital for a broken arm and, like Richard Strauss also surveying the results of his loyalty to the Nazi regime, taking refuge in the Romanticism of the past. Ensemble Ulf Hoelscher.
