SERGEI TANEYEV (1856-1915): Violin Sonata, Piano Quartet in E, Op. 20.

Description: The late sonata from 1911 was not published until 1948 and represents a relaxed lyrical side of the composer not often encountered. Monothematic and polyphonic throughout its four movements and 23 minutes, it is a tribute to Taneyev's ingenious inventiveness in motivic work and counterpoint while being delightful to the ear. There is currently no other recording of this sonata. Better known is the large-scale, 37-minute quartet of 1906, as good an example as any of the weighty and serious side of this composer. Vladimir Ovcharek (violin), Vladmiri Stopichev (viola), Iosif Levenson (cello), Eliso Virsaladze (piano - Op. 20), Tamara Fidler (piano - sonata).
