FRANZ SCHUBERT (1797-1828): Alfonso und Estrella, D 732.
Catalogue Number: 03K036
Description: This is liable to be the most star-studded performance of any Schubert opera you're likely to see or hear. Rejected for performance in Vienna in 1821, it saw the stage only when Liszt staged it as an act of homage to Schubert in 1854. Dramatically weak, it has wonderful music: full-fledged grand operatic vocal parts and orchestration to match in places, while in others elements of the Singspiel still cling (this was the first through-composed, no-dialogue opera by Schubert). Harnoncourt makes some cuts within numbers to tighten the dramatic effect in this film of a 1997 performance at the Theater an der Wien. English subtitles. Endrik Wottrich (tenor), Luba Orgonasova (soprano), Olaf Bär, Thomas Hampson (baritones), Alfred Muff (bass), Arnold Schoenberg Choir, Chamber Orchestra of Europe; Nikolaus Harnoncourt. 16:9 widescreen format. NTSC, region 0. Dolby Surround 5.0 or Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo. 140 min.
