Description: Pasatieri's comic opera, based on a French farce by Feydeau (transported in the composer's own libretto to a ranch in Texas) is a thoroughly likable, popularly accessible work, tonal and melodic throughout. The plot is the sort of silly thing one expects under the circumstances - multiple suspected marital infidelities, misunderstandings, unnecessarily complicated traps set and finally, reconciliation and happiness all round. The music progresses jauntily in a succession of set pieces - arias and ensembles - in a straightforward narrative sequence without much operatic artifice, almost more in the manner of a very articulate musical than a product of the grand operatic tradition at times. The work was a hit with audiences during its run in Kentucky and California, and it is easy to see why. Libretto included. University of Kentucky Opera Theatre; John Nardolillo.
