Description: This group has already offered us Tchaikovsky, Borodin and Rimsky-Korsakov on authentic instruments. As the conductor here points out, Ravel is as distant from us as Mozart was from Tchaikovsky. Gut strings are used but the most evident difference will be heard in the typically French woodwinds whose high degree of individuality actually led to some players in the orchestra letting specialists play those instruments for this recording. Bolero follows Ravel's tempo markings so that this performance comes out at just under 17 minutes; a separate note deals with the Erard piano's particular virtues in traversing Ravel's concerto. Claire Chevallier (1905 Erard), Anima Eterna; Jos van Immerseel.
