Description: Yes, it's now official that Shelley is recording all of the symphonies, so we've got battling Spohr cycles from Hyperion and cpo. The Fourth, with its unusual slow finale and second movement which contains a lullaby, a dance and a lover's serenade and its third movement tempo di marcia leading into a sort of tone-poem, all make a lot more sense when, as now, you can read the long poem (in German and English) by Spohr's good friend Carl Pfeiffer who had recently died at the age of 28. The overture to an 1814 cantata celebrating Napoleon's defeat at Waterloo is an eight-minute work of youthful vigor which receives its world premiere recording here. Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana; Howard Shelley.
