BOHUSLAV MARTINU (1890-1959): Symphony No. 4, Estampes, Le Départ.
Catalogue Number: 03J013
Label: Fuga Libera
Description: Two rarities here: Martinu's last orchestral work, Estampes (1958) is a curious, enigmatic and oddly subdued piece in his neo-impressionist manner, very delicately scored with prominent piano and harp (the only other CD recording of this is the mono Louisville Orchestra on First Edition). Le Départ is an 11-minute interlude from the unusual "opera-film" Les Trois souhaits of 1929. It depicts a sea-voyage although its relentless driving rhythms and energy put it in the same category as Martinu's own Half-time and La Bagarre or Honegger's Pacific 231. National Orchestra of Belgium; Walter Weller.
