JOHANN NEPOMUK HUMMEL (1778-1837): Der Durchzug durchs Rote Meer.

Description: Like many of Hummel's works, this oratorio is hard to date, but it's likely that it comes from the composer's period at Esterhazy, not least for its obvious models - Haydn's Creation in terms of style and pictorialism - and such previous works on the same subject as C.P.E. Bach's Die Israeliten in der Wüste. Relatively brief (51 minutes), the work has almost no solo arias, all of them being intertwined with choruses and separated by secco (Pharoah and the Egyptians) or accompanied (God and the Isrealites) recitatives. Plenty of drama and quite a bit of Hummel's own innovation in form and design. German-English texts. Simone Kermes, Veronika Winter (sopranos), Hans Jörg Mammel tenor), Ekkehard Abele, Wolf Matthias Friedrich (basses), Rheinische Kantorei, Das Kleine Konzert; Hermann Max.
