Description: The violin sonatas cover most of Gernsheim’s career, from the fourteen-year-old’s E minor sonata, composed for exercise purposes in Leipzig and heard here for the first time on album, to the op. 4 (published in 1865), his first full-fledged contribution to this genre, to the three mature works of 1885, 1898 and 1912. The Fourth, a work dedicated to Henri Marteau, may be regarded as the high point of Gernsheim’s duo oeuvre: here his contrapuntal line of thought, something that he had always cultivated, extends over the entire composition. 2 CDs. Christoph Schickedanz (violin), Ernst Breidenbach (piano).
