Description: Fauré was not quite 18 when he wrote this three-movement, 11-minute sonata which may have been intended as a teaching piece: Mozart, Beethoven and Haydn seem to be the sources of the three movements and Fauré slips in some unexpected twists. The two-minute mazurka (à la Chopin) comes from around 1865 and both come from the Beinecke Library at Yale. Nicolas Stavy (piano).
