Description: These symphonies now get their third recordings of the CD era, the First (1916) unusually concise (21 minutes or so) for a first symphony, with reminiscences of Tchaikovsky and Sibelius but only in passing, hints of folk music but only hints, in all, a rather original contribution to the repertoire of symphonic beginnings. By 1927, the Third (1927) was a breath of fresh air on a Finnish music scene usually known for more portentous utterances, Gallic in its elegance of expression, refined and translucent, as befits a work which was born in France. Okon Fuoko (a Japanese puppet maker) dates from 1925 and shows affinities with Ravel and Prokofiev. Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra; John Storgårds.
