Description: Amphion (1786) was Cherubini's calling-card to Paris but was never performed, possibly due to content which could have seemed pre-Revolutionary. At 28 minutes, it's almost an operatic scena with chorus in two numbers. Clytemnestre was written in 1794 at the height of the Terror and one might see that in the depiction of the family of Atreus and in the description of Iphigenia's decapitation. Firmly a revolutionary piece, Mirabeau was a play in honor of a recently deceased hero and the adoration of the man and the hopeless pain expressed in the third chorus are all of a part with what would become a cult. French-English texts. Maïlys de Villoutreys (soprano), Ursula Eittinger (alto), Andreas Karasiak (tenor), Kölner Akademie; Michael Alexander Willens.
