Description: Spur is a work of significant scale and scope, written in the free-floating modernist idiom that Nordheim had adopted during the 1970s. Acoustical processes borrowed from his investigations of electroacoustic music find their way into the music, alongside an endlessly inventive and challenging part for the soloist, developed in collaboration with Mogens Ellegaard, for whom Dinosauros was written. The work divides quite evidently into three movements, with an extended cadenza full of 'electronic' sounds preceding the glacial landscape that concludes the work, and the sense of a dialogue between the accordion's two keyboards. Hints of the harmonies and timbres of the composer's Messiaen-influenced last period are intermittently to be heard in the orchestration. The six short movements of Signals are very tightly structured, with the electric guitar treated very differently from its more familiar mode of expression. Dinosauros is playful, treating the accordion and its taped counterpart as the ultimate acoustic synthesizer of weird and wonderful sound effects, while Flashing, which expands on the cadenza from Spur belongs to Nordheim's polystylistic later period, incorporating a greater degree of neo-romantic melody and harmony than the earlier works. Frode Haltli (accordion), Raoul Björkenheim (electric guitar), Hans-Kristian Kjos Sørensen (percussion), Norwegian Radio Orchestra; Christian Eggen.
