Description: This is a fairly approachable disc for collectors of Russian music and they only need be mildly adventurous since all four composers use established classical forms and mostly tonal vocabularies. Tchaikovsky's sonata's three movements are titled "Chaconne", "Scherzo" and "Aria" and the music is mostly based on themes from his opera One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich in a post-romantic idiom. You'll find quotes from Mozart and Beethoven, neo-romanticism spiked with uses of sonorism in Ryabov's set of Bagatelles and a wider eclecticism of styles in the shortest work here, Mndoyants' seven-minute work based on Paganini's most famous theme. All but the Shchedrin are World Premiere Recordings.
