Description: If you have the old, early 90s Simax disc with the Tema con variazioni, this new release will bring you 30 minutes of previously unavailable music; if not, 55 minutes. If you like Irgens-Jensen's music, you really ought to have the 1926 "Theme with Variations", a 25-minute work which restores four variations cut by the composer in 1949 (and not on the Grüner-Hegge recording on Simax). It takes Brahms and Reger's variation works as a starting point for a simple diatonic melody subjected to increasingly multi-layered complexity and ending in the almost required fugue. Both new works, the Partita (1937) and the suite (1935) are derived from stage music with both having more of a relation to Norwegian folk music than the other works here. The symphony was just released on Naxos in October of 2011 (10N002), along with the Passacaglia and Air. The Rondo marziale you see in the list above is the original third movement of the symphony so Naxos' trumpeting of their recording as "world premiere original version" just means that they played it after the other two movements of the symphony. 2 CDs. Trondheim Symphony Orchestra; Eivind Aadland.
