ERICH WOLFGANG KORNGOLD (1897-1957): Die stumme Serenade, Op. 36.
Catalogue Number: 02N007
Reference: 777 485-2
Description: The last of Korngold's published compositions to be recorded, this work had a long gestation (from 1944 to its premiere, it took ten years and the musical world had completely changed). Part opera, part operetta, part revue, Korngold even once hoped to premiere it on Broadway. In the event, its German premiere came at a time when it could only be seen as a hopelessly dated anachronism. Scored for small chamber orchestra consisting of two pianos, celesta, two violins, cello, flute, clarinet/saxophone, trumpet, and assorted percussion instruments, it is still pure Korngold when it comes to its many irresistible and catchy melodies. 2 CDs. German libretto. Sarah Regener (soprano), Birger Radde (baritone), Young Opera Company, Holst-Sinfonietta; Klaus Simon.
