Description: Admirers of Fitkin's lively, energetic, process-based tonal compositions will find much to enjoy in the exuberant two-piano concerto Circuit. Based on blocks of material - pounding chords, toccata figuration, meditative slow material - which progressively interact as the piece proceeds, the work makes ample use of the antiphonal potential of two pianos and the textural massiveness added by the orchestra. Relent and Furniture share a mechanistic energy, in Fitkin's characteristic irregular repeated gestural form, the assumed downbeat constantly shifting about, repeatedly wrong-footing the listener and maintaining an element of rhythmic surprise. Carnal does the same sort of thing with an imposing opening in octaves, fast mechanical quasi-minimalism, and contrasting slow music. Several pieces display a more meditative side of the composer; the Skemptonesque early From Yellow and T1, the latter written for the reverberant acoustic of an art gallery; these works unfold gradually and gently, without the exhilarating brittle insistence of most of the music here. Noriko Ogawa, Kathryn Stott (pianos).
