Description: These works were all written shortly before the composer's death and published posthumously; all share the eloquent, elegant craftsmanship typical of Martino's work. The piano trio combines his characteristic rhythmic flexibility with strongly lyrical linear writing for the strings and a notable avoidance of harshness in the harmony of what is undeniably an atonal vocabulary based on serial techniques. The string quartet displays Martino's profound sense of tradition, with late Beethoven as a readily apparent model and a complete mastery of counterpoint in a conventionally laid out in a four-movement major addition to the quartet repertoire. The clarinet trio sets lively writing for the piano against a lyrical, linear texture from the other instruments; a 'concertante' flourish for the clarinet (Martino's instrument in his youth) anticipating the third movement pays tribute to the multi-faceted composer's jazz background, otherwise generally only detectable in the sense of passionate, improvisatory discussion within a controlled framework. The four-movement violin sonata is a taut, tightly organized work of great individuality within the confines of a traditional instrumental combination and form.
