Description: Danzas secretas is an unusual concertante symphony in all but name; four movements with an expository opening movement, the slow movement second, then a mysterious and agitated scherzo, and a final broad, solemn summation. The movements are linked by intervallic relationships, and the vocabulary is firmly based in tonality, with rhythmic diversity provided by constantly shifting meters, a characteristic of the composer's style. Frondoso misterio is a cello concerto in seven sections, played continuously. Even more than the harp work, an obsessive preoccupation with specific intervals as building-blocks of the work's material is apparent. The work alternates tense, agitated music, frequently ostinato-driven and featuring continuous, angry commentary from the solo cello with evocative, lyrical movements, culminating in the central Elegía, the work's true slow movement, profoundly expressive and melodic. Again, the composer's harmonic vocabulary is very free, with a sense of tonality always present. Frédérique Cambreling (harp), Asier Polo (cello), Basque National Orchestra; Arturo Tamayo.
