Description: It's next to impossible to characterize Ohana's music due to the variety of influences he absorbed, from the Sephardic traditions of his father and the Andalusian ones of his mother, the classical traditions of France and Spain, Afro-Cuban music, jazz, medieval monody and Gregorian chant, the Javanese gamelan, Japanese music - all from different periods of his life, combining in his mature period to produce his personal style. His interest in a sensuous, primeval music, spiritual, simple and direct although also evoking mysterious symbols of the unconscious mind suggest affinities with Jolivet and, in its mystical aspect, Messiaen. These works of the 40s and the Préludes of 1972-73 should appeal to collectors of Jolivet and Messiaen but, of course, won't "sound like them". They'll sound like Ohana. Prodromos Symeonidis (piano).
