Description: The musicologist Robert Stevenson called Villanueva a "genius of the first order, a true glory of his country... he was America's Franz Schubert" (when "America" meant America and not just the United States). Although most of these pieces are in European salon style or, in the case of the Fantasía, the virtuosic concert style, Villanueva's danzas humoristicas cultivate an unmistakably Mexican style, as much as Edison Cervantes' Cuban Quadrilles did for his country. Edison Quintana (piano).
